Purdue Research Foundation - Purdue University
Committee on the Use of Human Research Subjects
Institutional Review Board (IRB)
- Basic Principles Involving Human Subjects
- This project or activity must conform to the principles that justify the project or activity in general.
- Procedures should be conducted only by scientifically qualified persons. If any existing or potential risk of
alteration or impairment of physical or mental functions is present, adequate professional consultation should be
obtained.
- Every project should be preceded by careful assessment of inherent risks in comparison to foreseeable benefits to
the subject or to others.
- Special caution should be exercised by Investigators and their personnel in performing any activity in which the
personality and/or well-being of the subject is likely to be altered by chemicals or other experimental procedures.
- Research Activities Combined With Professional/Clinical Care
- In the treatment of a sick person, the therapist may use a new therapeutic measure if, in his judgment, it offers
hope of saving life, re-establishing health, or alleviating suffering, provided always that a valid consent for the
treatment has first been obtained.
- The therapist may combine research activities with professional/clinical care, the objective being the acquisition of
medical knowledge, only to the extent that the research activity is justified by its potential therapeutic value for the
patient, and provided always that a valid consent is first obtained.
- Non-Therapeutic Activities Involving Human Subjects
In the purely scientific application of activities carried out using human subjects, the Investigators and their personnel
are under a duty to use reasonable and prudent care to protect the life or the health of the subject while the activity is
being conducted.
- Committee Approval
The Purdue University Committee on the Use of Human Research Subjects must approve the procedures to be followed in all
research involving human subjects prior to the recruitment of any human subjects or the commencement of research using any
human subject. Investigators shall provide, as may be requested by the Committee, justification and explanation of the
procedures to be followed. The Committee may at any time exercise executive authority to require Investigators to change
or discontinue the use of procedures or agents which pose a threat to human safety, rights or welfare.
